Domaine Ponty, nestled in the heart of Fronsac on the right bank of Bordeaux, is a family-owned estate with a rich history dating back to 1905. It was founded by Victor Ponty, the great-grandfather of Hélène Ponty, who leads the estate today as the fifth generation of winemakers.
Victor, originally from a family of farmers in Corrèze, had a deep passion for wine and a dream of creating something that would bring people together. His journey led him to Fronsac, where a chance encounter with a local schoolteacher introduced him to a community of winemakers devoted to tradition, craftsmanship, and the joy of sharing their wines. Inspired by their simple yet authentic approach, Victor not only married the schoolteacher but also dedicated his life to preserving and passing down this way of life to future generations.
Through the years, the estate has remained true to these values, with each generation—Jean, François, and Michel—contributing to its evolution. Since 2019, Hélène Ponty has carried on the family legacy, ensuring that the vineyard’s philosophy, rooted in tradition and authenticity, continues to guide the work in both the vines and the cellar.
Hélène Ponty is the fifth-generation winemaker at Domaine Ponty in Fronsac, where she grew up surrounded by vineyards, watching her father work in the cellar and walking through the same buildings where her great-grandfather crafted the estate’s first wines. Although she initially pursued studies in law and business, her journey took her abroad, living in the United States and China before ultimately feeling the call to return home. In September 2019, she took over the family estate, determined to leave her mark on its long-standing tradition.
Deeply connected to nature, Hélène believes that a vineyard should be a thriving ecosystem, beneficial to all who interact with it—the vines, the team, the clients, the local fauna and flora, and the surrounding community. Inspired by the properties she visited in France and beyond, she saw that the most vibrant estates were those practicing organic or biodynamic farming. Naturally, she adopted this philosophy at Domaine Ponty, fostering living soils rich in biodiversity.
In the cellar, she follows a minimal intervention approach, allowing the quality of the grapes and terroir to shine. Her goal is to craft wines with a strong personality and a distinctive signature—wines that leave a lasting impression. Staying true to her father’s philosophy, she does not chase trends but instead produces wines she loves to drink: fresh, expressive, complex, with beautiful fruit expression and oak that enhances rather than overwhelms.
Château du Pavillon
The small 19th-century pavilion located in the middle of the vineyard gave its name to Château du Pavillon, one of the finest wines of Canon Fronsac. Acquired in 1925, Château du Pavillon is historically the Ponty family's first vineyard, and represents our style and values. Each year, we want to express with this wine what our family, and what the wines of Canon Fronsac constantly strive for: the elegance of a wine, its richness and freshness, always with perfect balance. This wine also represents our roots, the place where several generations of our family were born and raised, married, and passed on their know-how. It's a bit like our heart in a bottle!
